International dot day
September 15, 2016
Thursday was International Dot Day! To give you some background, the day is inspired by the book "The Dot" by Peter H. Reynolds. In this book, Vashti (the main character) is discouraged because she believes she can't draw. Her art teacher encourages her to do her best and to let go of her fear. By the end of the book Vashti's simple "dot" drawings are on display for everyone to see. The moral of the story is that everyone is an artist and Dot Day is dedicated to this idea! Our classroom made our own artwork and then used a special ipad app to make it come alive. Here are some pictures and a link to the story! Enjoy!

Hansel and Gretel Ballet
October 7, 2016
Today we went to East Grand Rapids middle school to enjoy their performance of Hansel and Gretel! We loved the ballet. Students were expected to show respect to the performers by listening and watching. We also had the opportunity to not only watch talented actors/dancers but also see how they set up the stage! Our students did a fabulous job being respectful, learning about the ballet, and having fun!

Pinery Park
October 20, 2016
Today we took an impromptu "field trip" to Pinery Park to enjoy one of the last nice days of the year. We had a great time playing on a different playground than we were used to :) As always we wrote about the experience in our journals. The kids had a great time having a little extra recess but were a bit tired after the "long" walk. One student complained, "I need a taxi to pick me up!" Funny stuff!

Schwallier's Orchard
October 24, 20
We had an amazing time at Schwallier's orchard! We had the opportunity to learn about different types of apples and their life cycles while we enjoyed some of their incredible donuts and apple cider. After we indulged we learned that Schwalliers sells over 10,000 donuts a weekend- and we could see why! After our snack, we picked apples and pumpkins, fed baby goats, played on their fun tunnel slide, and played in the "corn box!" It was a fun filled day!

Bird feeders :)
December 8, 2016
We braved the cold to make these awesome bird feeders with the rest of the 1st grade! We dipped pinecones in peanut butter, rolled them in seeds, and then hung them in our unique outdoor learning space here at the ECC. Big thanks to Miss Stasiak for prividing the materials and orchestrating the whole thing!

Children's museum
February 16, 2017
Due to a very low number of students present, the six students who were at school had the opportunity to take an impromptu field trip to the Children's Museum with the Kindergarten grade level! The Children's museum is always a blast! They had a very cool balance beam exhibit, the usual musical instruments, and as always, the awesome "grocery store!" One of my personal favorites is the bubble making station!

Creation station
February 24, 2017
This was such a unique trip. The creation station on Plainfield in Grand Rapids opened in October! Mrs. Blume, one of the second grade teachers discovered this awesome place while searching for "stem" activities! Inside the creation station, there are lots of opportunities to use your imagination including a huge lego trough, a life size angry birds slingshot, tons of connect blocks, board games, and a huge dinosaur digging sight! This was unlike any trip we had been on and the kids really enjoyed it!

Devos home and garden show
March 3, 2017
Today we visited the beautiful DeVos Center to enjoy the Grand Rapids home and garden show. We had the opportunity to learn about insects and plants, participate in a scavenger hunt, and even plant our own flowers! We thought it was really cool to look at all the ideas for the home, too! :)

Kentwood fun spot
March 28? 2017
Today was FUN! We work hard and play hard! We toughed through difficult roller skating while jamming to fun music! Many of our students had never skated before and took on the challenge. We have some bumps and bruises as battle wounds! Fun day!

Grand valley ceramics!
April 14, 2017
This was one of the best field trips we have been on this year. The Ceramics students at Grand Valley prepared a great day for us. We all got our own canvas and work area to create an imaginary animal out of clay! After the clay hardened, we painted our animals with fun colors. The Grand Valley students are going to "cook" our projects in a kiln and give them to us too keep! Such a fun and novel experience. Oh yeah, they gave us pizza too! Thanks so much Grand Valley!

school approved wrestling
May 23, 2017
So today wasn't exactly a field trip, but it was just as fun! Our crazy (fun) school social worker brought in these awesome "wresting balls" and we got to (safely) battle each other! We practiced patience and self control while waiting for our turn to participate in the battle. No one got too wild, and we had a ton of fun!

Today was our last field trip of the year! :( It was all about fun. We had an awesome picnic with our sack lunches, played on the unique play set, and of course topped it off with s'mores. The only photos I have are actually of us eating s'mores but I promise, we DID get some exercise, too :).
